Clearwater is a city in the Tampa Bay region of Florida, with a wonderful offshore beach, reached via the Memorial Causeway Bridge from the centre of the city. The offshore island, or Key, is a self-contained holiday suburb of air-conditioned shopping malls, great seafood restaurants and modern hotels. The Gulf Highway, route 699, ties all of these Central Florida keys together and makes for a wonderful drive along the coast. But, back in Clearwater, leave the car behind and stroll around its grid of streets to enjoy this trim Florida town, and its well-managed core of shops, attractions and bars. The locals are very proud of their city - and they have good reason to be: despite its relative peace, its influence on the homeland, and the rest of the world, is not insignificant - it's home to the church of Scientology, and, ironically, was the birthplace of Hooters, that US bar chain where barstaff only really need two qualifications to secure a position... It's a bustling place, with a lively calendar of events, from a respected Jazz festival to summer beach concerts and swimming galas. On the mainland side of the causeway there are even more options - from (even bigger) malls, a couple of museums and, further still, the delights of Tampa City, with Busch Gardens perhaps the region's biggest draw. Many believe Clearwater to be the best beach resort on the gulf - and it's certainly a well developed, spic and span place that's easy to be seduced by.
