Planning your visit

The USA is a huge country to explore, with 50 states to choose from, flanked by two oceans and covering an incredibly varied terrain. For five centuries, since the 'New World' discoveries of Christopher Columbus, people from every corner of the globe have come here in search of 'the American Dream'. Between them, they have created the richest, most powerful country on earth, and a fascinating melting pot of cultures and traditions. It is the astonishing, vast landscapes that make the USA truly distinctive -spectacular national parks like Yosemite and the Everglades, rugged ice fields, the Great Lakes and the desert plains - and such awe-inspiring sights as the Grand Canyon and the Rocky Mountains should be on every visitor's must-see list. As Gertrude Stein remarked: 'In the United States there is more space where nobody is than where anybody is. That is what makes America what it is'. One of the world's greatest cities, New York offers is a magnificent choice for a short break, with famous sights such as the Empire State Building, Central Park, Madison Avenue and, of course, the Statue of Liberty. You can choose from over 100 museums, including the 'Met' and the 'Modern', or for those looking to pick up some bargains, try Macy's or Bloomingdale's. Chicago, the 'Windy City' successfully combines past and present from 19th century buildings to the high tech Sears Tower. There are magnificent shops, leisure activities on the shores of Lake Michigan, and nightlife from blues bars to jazz clubs. Visitors to Boston today will find a warm welcome, although the famous 'Tea Party' of 1773 is still remembered. A compact city, everywhere is convenient and there is nowhere better to enjoy the views than Boston Common. As American as apple pie, yet designed by a Frenchman, Washington D.C. is an elegant city with tree-lined boulevards. From the White House to the Pentagon, impressive public buildings remind you that this is the political heart of America. Nevertheless, it offers leafy parks and world-class museums, as well as bargain shopping at Crystal City or Potomac Mills. By night, Las Vegas will simply take your breath away. It's the city that never sleeps; a place where if you tire of gambling you can take in a show or even go golfing. Before you leave, make sure you take a flight over the Grand Canyon for some spectacular views.
