For a little more action but equally delicious scenery, try Ibiza. A land of dramatic contrasts with hilltop churches, hippy markets, secluded coves and legendary nightlife, the 'white island' offers them all.
PLACES TO VISIT
The old quarter of Ibiza Town is a delightful warren of squeezed-tight streets, crowned by the island's graceful Cathedral, with its illuminated clock acting like a beacon.
ENTERTAINMENT
Every night is party night in high-spirited Ibiza Town. Drag artists and acrobats parade though the twisting central streets, summoning the city to dance the night away. The hippy vibe persists, though. At health spas throughout the island you can experience crystal healing, tantric massage and holistic re-balancing.
HISTORY & CULTURE
The first settlements on Ibiza date back over 3000 years but it was the Carthaginians, around 2,500 years ago, who built Ibiza Town, one of the oldest continually habited townships in Europe. The mosque above the town is proof that the island was under Arab rule in the 9th century, while the defence towers show that, even before the clubbers arrived, Ibiza was a seductive spot for pirates intent on some raving of their own.
FOOD & DRINK
In Ibiza Town, which enjoys a reputation for fine cooking, there's plenty of choice. The smartest restaurants are to be found around Dalt Vila - on Plaza de Vila and Sa Carrossa - or down by the waterfront. Ibizan cuisine, like that of its neighbouring islands, focused on meaty stews and sausages, fresh fish and shellfish. Sa Penya, the old fishermen's quarter, is a good place to hunt out seafood restaurants.
WALKS & SCENERY
The Romans called Ibiza Pine Island - you can see why. Ibiza's rolling hills are blanketed in them. And, where forests end, olive and fig tree groves punctuate the patchwork of farmland and village. At only 45 km by 25 km, you can easily explore the island in a week.
