Diving in the Red Sea Resorts
The Red Sea Resorts of Hurghada, Makadi Bay, Soma Bay and El Gouna offer many exciting and varied dive sites, with most located close to small islands or at reefs rising up from the seabed. To give you an idea of the range of opportunities available, we have listed below a few of the most popular locations, with diving to satisfy novices and experts alike.
If you are particularly fond of wreck diving Abu Nahas Reef provides some excellent opportunities. Located at the south entrance to the Straits of Gubal it has posed a navigational hazard for ships throughout the centuries and is known as the 'ships graveyard'. Now adorned with a multitude of differently coloured coral, and home to scores of reef fish, lion fish, octopus and scorpion fish the four wrecks provide a fascinating diving experience. Extending all the way around the island of Big Siyul is Siyul Kabirah, with its distinctive black coral, numerous species of fish and a few caves ideal for underwater exploration.
In the deeper water, be on the look out for sharks and large rays which are often spotted swimming here.
The reef of Sha'ab Abu Ramada is also densely populated with a wide variety of reef fish, so much so that it has earned the nickname "The Aquarium".
