What Did You Do On Boxing Day? Thousands of Brits showed their support for the Thomas Cook campaign!
Traditionally Boxing Day is spent with family and friends or splashing out on bargains at the sales - but for many Brits our thoughts are further afield.
According to research from travel giant Thomas Cook more than half of us would love to jet off on holiday for much needed sunshine rather than enjoy some festive frolic. Holidays are a number one priority for Brits with a third of respondents claiming their holiday is the only thing to look forward to after Christmas.
And judging by the number of people who have reacted to the company's campaign for an extra Bank Holiday it would seem these findings are a pretty good reflection of the nation's state of mind. The festive season went with a bang for the travel favourite as its website was inundated with an overwhelming response to its call to action campaign urging the British public to vote for an extra Bank Holiday.
By close of play on Boxing Day more than 1,000 people had already logged onto www.thomascook.com or the company's Facebook group to sign the company's petition, calling on the Prime Minister to give Brits an extra Bank Holiday. And with recent research revealing that 57 per cent of MPs are in support of the introduction the company is set to go into campaign overdrive in the New Year.
"We've been taken aback at the response and it's still early days - it just goes to show you that the public are really keen on securing another day off. That's why we've made them a promise of a free day on millions of Thomas Cook holidays. We will champion their cause and fight for that extra day on their behalf," said Thomas Cook's Simon Carter.
With 79 days to go until the next Bank Holiday (Good Friday) Thomas Cook promises to lobby the Government to have an additional day off introduced - and in the meantime has promised to give its employees an extra day off in 2008 until it becomes official.
"We've always known how important holidays are to people. To hammer home our commitment to this campaign, we're not waiting for the legislation to be passed, as we are giving millions of our customers a free day in their summer holiday - we don't have to wait for the Government, but we certainly hope this petition will help push them to act," added Carter.
